Let X be a nonempty finite set, ∆(X) = { p : X → [0, 1] | Px∈X p(x) = 1}, and let % denote a binary relation on ∆(X). As usual,  and ∼ denote the asymmetric and symmetric parts of % . In our nomenclature elements of X are outcomes (or consequences or prizes), elements of ∆(X) are lotteries, and % is the preference relation. Axioms: A1 the relation % is complete and transitive. A2 (continuity) ∀p, q, r ∈ ∆(X) with p  q  r, there are α, β ∈ (0, 1) such that αp+(1−α)r  q  βp + (1 − β)r. A3 (independence or substitution) ∀p, q, r ∈ ∆(X), and α ∈ (0, 1] : p  q ⇒ αp+(1−α)r  αq+(1−α)r. (Note that for all p, q ∈ ∆(X), αp+(1−α)q ∈ ∆(X), and [αp+(1−α)q](x) = αp(x)+ (1−α)q(x). Obviously P x∈X [αp(x) + (1− α)q(x)] = 1.) Theorem (for lotteries). A binary relation % on ∆(X) satisfies A1, A2, and A3 iff there exists a (utility) function u : X → R such that, p % q ⇔ P x∈X p(x)u(x) ≥ P x∈X q(x)u(x). Moreover, a function v : X → R satisfies p % q ⇔ Px∈X p(x)u(x) ≥ Px∈X q(x)u(x) iff v(x) = αu(x) + β on X for α, β ∈ R , α > 0.

Lecture Notes for Introduction to Decision Theory
12 Arrow's Impossibility Theorem 72 13 References 75 2 These are notes for a basic class in decision theory. The focus is on decision under risk and under uncertainty, with relatively little on social choice. The notes contain the mathematical material, including all the formal models and proofs that will be presented in class, but they do not contain the discussion of background, interpretatio...
متن کاملFactors affecting students tendency of Univercity students to Lecture Notes
Introduction: Many studies detected factors contributing to the students’ tendency to lecture notes. This study aimed at evaluating the factors affecting students tendency to lecture notes in Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences. Methods: In this descriptive study, 179 students from medicine, nursing & midwifery, health, and Paramedicine schools were selected through stratified random...
متن کاملLecture Notes on Winning Strategies & Regions
This lecture continues the study of hybrid games and their logic, differential game logic [Pla15], that Lecture 20 on Hybrid Systems & Games started. Lecture 20 saw the introduction of differential game logic with a focus on identifying and highlighting the new dynamical aspect of adversarial dynamics. The meaning of hybrid games in differential game logic had been left informal, based on the i...
متن کاملAutomata and BDDs – new tools in verification and optimization
These lecture notes will develop the method of binary decision diagrams – a technique for representing Boolean functions – from automata theory. We include a compact presentation of automata theory required for the purpose, and indicate applications.
متن کاملLecture Notes in Lie Groups
These lecture notes in Lie Groups are designed for a 1–semester third year or graduate course in mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry or biology. This landmark theory of the 20th Century mathematics and physics gives a rigorous foundation to modern dynamics, as well as field and gauge theories in physics, engineering and biomechanics. We give both physical and medical examples of Lie gr...

In this paper, we review some known results that relate the statistical query complexity of a concept class to the spectral norm of its correlation matrix. Since spectral norms are widely used in various other areas, we are then able to put statistical query complexity in a broader context. We briefly describe some non-trivial connections to (seemingly) different topics in learning theory, comp...
